7 Signs of Gutter Damage on Your Home

damaged rain gutter

If you are like most people, your rain gutters are not something you really worry about. They need biannual gutter cleaning, but besides that, their functionality is incredibly simple.

It’s not until your gutters aren’t doing what they’re supposed to that you realize how important they are!

WHAT DO GUTTERS DO?

Gutters and downspouts go virtually unnoticed on most homes in Schaumburg. They blend into the home’s exterior unless the homeowner has opted for copper or wood … building materials that are definitely meant to stand out! Most home exteriors are made of durable yet lightweight aluminum or vinyl siding.

The purpose of rain gutters is to create a path of minimal resistance for rain to get off your roof as fast as possible. When they’re in good condition, your rain gutters will lead runoff away from the foundation and landscaping, protecting your home’s exterior from mold and mildew, the concrete and pavement and basement from leaking water, and the rain gutters themselves from rust.

When gutters are damaged, it can cause thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to your house and property.

ARE YOUR GUTTERS DAMAGED?

Gutter damage is too simple to repair to be the cause of any major home repairs! Keeping an eye on your gutters is easy and safe. If you notice any of the following signs, it’s a strong indication that your rain gutters have some kind of damage.

Once you find a possible gutter issue, you can decide whether it’s something you feel comfortable repairing or remedying on your own or if it’s a project you should trust a gutter specialist to handle.

Sitting Water Near Your Home

Sitting water near your home is a good sign that your gutters or downspouts are not directing the rain runoff away from your home the way they should be. Pooling water can lead to mold, weakening of your foundation, and provides the perfect habitat for mosquitoes. Plus, it will make the areas surrounding your home constantly soggy and muddy.

Mold or Mildew

Either one of these is a bad sign, whether you see mold or mildew on the rain gutters or the exterior of your home. Mold and mildew mean that there is too much moisture around that area – a possible issue with the gutters could be to blame. Remember that mildew and mold are likely to grow on the north side of a house anyway, so if that’s where they’re appearing, it may just be because that area doesn’t get a lot of direct sunlight. This is a scenario where the advice and expertise of a gutter specialist in Schaumburg would be helpful.

Rain Pouring Over the Gutter

You will have to wait until it’s raining to notice this gutter problem. Hopefully this doesn’t mean that you have gutter damage. It could just be that the gutter is full of debris and should be cleaned out. Either way, you want to have it looked at right away.

Basement Leaks

Based on the construction of your basement, your leak could be caused by any number of things. The standing water problem we mentioned before could definitely cause a basement leak. Egress windows and cinder block walls will only block out so much water. That’s why it is important to keep your gutters in good condition!

Landscaping or Lawn Damage

Gutters pour directly onto the ground most of the time, and landscaping should be laid out to work with this flow of water to help it disperse into the ground. But, a leaking gutter or clogged gutter will allow rainfall to overflow or pool in areas where it isn’t supposed to. This water can destroy plants either by force or by overwatering. It can also displace flower bed building materials like mulch or rock.

Water Marks

Water marks are a visible sign that there is excessive moisture on a surface. Water marks are sometimes left behind even if standing water has evaporated or dissipated into the ground. You will usually see water marks right under the rain gutters or behind the downspouts. This is a typically an indication that rain water is streaming down the outside of the gutters rather than staying inside of them.

Visible Gutter Damage

The last sign of gutter damage is the simplest to find. If your gutters are bent, sagging or cracked, they definitely have damage. Following a storm, it’s a good idea to walk around your house to assess any damage to the roof, exterior, and gutters. These inspections are in addition to any standard home inspections.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR GUTTERS?

Here are a couple of simple tips Schaumburg Gutter Service recommends to help prevent gutter damage:

Clean your gutters at least one time a year. You can lengthen the time between gutter repairs by keeping them cleaned out regularly. As with anything else, the better you care for your rain gutters, the less issues you’ll experience with them.

The best time to clean gutters is in the spring, but to be extra cautious, give them a good cleaning in the fall, too. Most homeowners clean their gutters themselves, but there are local gutter cleaning companies that provide this service so you don’t have to deal with the mess or the risk.

Check your gutters often. Signs of damage can be visible from the outside of the gutters. Just a fast inspection – with both feet firmly on the ground – should reveal any of the issues we discussed above.

We’d recommend that you complete an exterior home inspection following each season to confirm that your gutters are working correctly.

When you see signs of gutter damage, act fast. Fixing a problem before it becomes too bad can save you a lot of time and money. A small crack, for example, can be sealed, or the section of gutter with the crack can easily be replaced very affordably and quickly.

However, if you let the problem go on too long, you could end up needing repairs in your basement, replacing expensive vinyl siding or redoing an entire section of landscaping.
